The Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership is a partnership between the Gloucestershire Association of Secondary Headteachers (GASH) and the University of Gloucestershire. The close partnership was established in 1992 and is unique in that so many of the secondary schools in one county work in tandem with the county's University. There are now over 50 secondary schools involved who take trainee teachers every year.

There is much to be celebrated by the partnership created between schools and the University of Gloucestershire. Many of our newly qualified teachers have gone on to posts within Gloucestershire schools and partnership schools in neighbouring counties. The management of the course, writing of course materials, and the interviewing of potential course members are all undertaken by representatives of both partners.

Training to be a secondary school teacher through the Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership (GITEP) illustrates the benefits to be gained from working with professional organisations and expert practitioners. Indeed, the school-centred nature of our programme enables Trainee Teachers to acquire the professional values, skills and knowledge necessary to progress in a career in teaching. The scheme has been widely acclaimed, receiving considerable interest both nationally and internationally.

School experience is central to the course and will provide you with an early opportunity to develop skills of preparation, implementation and reflection within a secondary school context. Of the 36 weeks that make up the course, 26 weeks are spent in partnership schools where you will receive invaluable support from experienced teachers as you move from novice to confident practitioner. Throughout this time there will be regular opportunities to meet postgraduate trainees from other schools and to work with the Religious Education Subject Co-ordinator, herself a working school teacher. Thus, you will gain a wide understanding of secondary schooling and the implications of educational thinking and social policy.

Trainee teachers on the course have access to many outstanding school Religious Education departments. The Religious Education Subject Co-ordinator works with Subject Mentors in schools to plan course content and support for trainees at all stages of their training. In addition, experienced Religious Education Subject Mentors work closely with their respective Trainees, gradually introducing them to teaching opportunities within the school R.E. department. The course also offers access to the learning resources and ICT suite at the University of Gloucestershire. The Religious Education subject course has a proven record of success with trainees successfully taking up teaching posts in a wide range of secondary schools across the U.K.
